Friends of Madison Heights Youth Make a Difference to Lamphere Students
Providing positive
opportunities for the youth of Madison
Heights is the goal of the organization Friends of
Madison Heights Youth. With that in mind the group presented Marsha Pando,
Lamphere's Superintendent and Brad Lyon, Board of Education President with a
donation for $10,000 to the Lamphere Scholarship Fund at the September 15, 2009
Board meeting.
Accepting the donation,
Pando said "I'm overwhelmed with your generosity. This is going to provide so
many of our students with the opportunity to continue their education after
graduating high school."
The Lamphere Scholarship
fund was established to benefit Lamphere students and is funded by donations
from the community and various fundraisers held throughout the school year
which is being held for the first time this school year. Since it's inception,
51 scholarships have been awarded to Lamphere students.
If you'd like additional
information about the Lamphere Scholarship Fund or to make a donation, please

As your children return for the 2009/2010 school year, we want you to know that the Lamphere Schools is working together with the Oakland County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to monitor the H1N1 flu situation closely. Attached you will find a parent letter from the Oakland County Health Department recommending the steps you can take to protect you and your family during the flu season.
At Lamphere Schools, everyone will be doing their part to ensure the safety of all students and staff. Our teachers will share information with students on how to prevent the spread of disease and germs, our custodial staff, as always, will sanitize common areas such as push plates and door handles, water fountains, desks and restrooms and the administration will be communicating information with parents and the community as information changes. We are asking our parents to help us minimize the flu this season by reminding children to utilize proper respiratory etiquette by covering their nose and mouth when sneezing and then immediately washing hands.

Jim Martin, Lamphere's Athletic Trainer recently
spoke at a dinner to kick off Beaumont
Hospital's Heart Check
screening program. "The
significance of this type of screening is that Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
is a silent killer," said Martin. "Young
athletes have died from HCM, having experienced no prior symptoms. This shows
the importance of pre-participation physicals. Often, student-athletes receive
inexpensive, "production line" type physicals, given merely to fulfill a
mandated requirement. Proper screening can diagnose HCM and avoid an
unnecessary tragedy."
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease in which the heart
muscle (myocardium) becomes abnormally thick - or hypertrophied. This
thickened heart muscle can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may also affect the heart's electrical
system.
Beaumont Hospital, Oakland University and WXYZ-TV7 are teaming up to offer free heart screenings for high school students:
Saturday, November 14
9
am to 5 pm Oakland University's Recreation and Athletic Center

providers in the county. Consult with your provider to see if it will be
available at their location.
Who Should Get the 2009 H1N1

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) target population to consider receiving the
2009 H1N1 flu vaccine. The target population includes:
-
Pregnant Women
-
Caregivers for children under
6 months of age
-
Children and young adults
ages 6 months through 24 years

How to Pre-Enroll For Your H1N1 Flu
Vaccine
We encourage all
those interested in receiving the 2009 H1N1 vaccine at an OCHD clinic to
pre-enroll online at
www.oakgov.com/health
. Pre-enrollment helps
us with planning and also provides you with a consent form to take to the clinic
of your choice. It should be noted that pre-enrollment does not guarantee a flu
shot at our clinics. Flu shots will be provided based on availability. 2009 H1N1
flu clinics will be held after school hours or on Saturdays. Clinics will begin
once OCHD has received 20,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. OCHD will offer the
2009 H1N1 vaccine
free of charge.
